How we work

Careful, transparent and with our mission first

How we choose projects, keep track of where the money goes and account for every donation.

Project criteria

How we choose projects

We want to be able to work with many partners. We can only do that if we are careful: we choose projects using clear project criteria and keep watch over where every euro ends up. That way we stay credible, and our mission stays intact.

Every project goes through the same steps. We check it against fixed criteria, with a few strict knock-out conditions, a weighing of feasibility, and a risk assessment that determines how closely we look. The criteria are based on guidelines from, among others, the Dutch Tax and Customs Administration, the FATF, Goede Doelen Nederland and the Dutch government.

  1. Intake

We map out the project, the people and the context.

  2. Criteria and knock-outs

Does it fit our mission? Does it meet the strict conditions? If not, it stops here.

  3. Due diligence

We look into the partner and where the money goes, in as much depth as the risk requires.

  4. Decision

The board weighs it up and decides, with our mission as the touchstone.

  5. Agreements

Clear, two-way agreements: what we expect, and what the partner can expect from us.

  6. Payment and monitoring

Payment in stages, and we record what is done with the funds.

We apply these criteria voluntarily, because they give confidence that we work with care.

ANBI

Transparency and ANBI

Layan Foundation is a registered Dutch charity with ANBI status. The Dutch Tax and Customs Administration recognises us as an Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling (ANBI), or public benefit organisation. This means the foundation does not have to pay tax on gifts and inheritances it receives, so no tax is taken off your donation. Under certain conditions, donors can deduct donations to an ANBI from Dutch income tax or corporation tax.
